Property Maintenance

I had been hunting around the shops trying to find that perfect last addition to our renovated bedroom. I was looking for a headboard, something a bit soft but not too feminine.  I finally found it but it retail price was $1200! Daniel suggested we make one, he knew how easy it would be to make with his background, and assured me it was an easy job… We’ll share with you what we did, so you can try to make your own with this simple DIY project.

Items we used:

  • Upholstery studs – From Trade Me
  • Front and lining material – Spotlight
  • Foam – Para Rubber
  • Framing timber and plywood – Dan had in the garage
  • Staple gun – already had one

Here are the steps we took to make it!

Step 1: Cut the board to size and frame with timber (for thickness), add holes to where the board will attach to the bed. Glue on the foam.

Step 2: Add the soft covering over the foam and the board and staple down. This is to protect the material and to make it more comfortable.

Step 3: Put the material on top and evenly spread over the head board. Next lay out the row of studs to see what suits best. We found that having them almost on top of the foam was best and made it have a nice cushion.

Step 4: Start hammering in the suds once the position is correct. Get them as straight as possible. These studs come in strips and you only have to hammer in every fifth one.

Step 5:  Once the front is all done, trim material and wrap it around the back. Staple some lining material on the back of the headboard to make it look neat and tidy.

Step 6: Done! Just tidy up any loose studs or staples.

End Result! I’m stoked! And it cost nowhere near $1200!!
